NO SCHOOL: Friday, 8/21 (Statehood Day)
Early College is a partnership between the Hawai‘i State Department of Education (HIDOE) and the University of Hawai‘i (UH) System that allows high school students to take “sheltered” college classes with their high school peers for free. Students who successfully complete classes receive both high school and college credit (dual credit).
Why Take Early College Courses?
Earn 1 high school credit and 3 college credits per semester
Grade goes onto high school & college transcript (dual credit)
Tuition & course materials are paid for by DOE & KHS
Some courses are weighted on a 5-point scale (GPA booster!)
Students take courses during the school day with their peers & get support from KHS teachers
This is a COLLEGE level course taught by college instructors
Must be able to work independently
Communication with instructor is very important
Follow HCC schedule (may have classes during non-DOE days)
Will require work outside of class (approximately 4-6 hours per week for EACH college class)
Grade in this course will impact future
Impact High School Graduation
Go on your College Transcript (viewed by colleges, scholarship committees and employers)
Failing courses may result in not being eligible for future Early College courses
Once students are accepted into courses they are NOT able to drop. This includes Spring Semester classes. They must commit to the ENTIRE YEAR.
Eligibility To Apply for Next Year:
Current Freshmen: 3.5+ S1 GPA (can take ONE period of EC classes next year as a sophomore)
Current Sophomores/Juniors: 3.0+ Cumulative GPA
(GPA 2.8+ may write a formal letter requesting acceptance & explain how they plan to be successful in EC classes)
No “F”s on most recent grading period
Must meet all application deadlines
Must pass EdReady placement tests

Courses: JPNS 101, JPNS 102, PHYS 100, Math 100, BIOL 101,
HIST 152, ENG 100, PHIL 100, PACS 108, HWST 105
Student can also earn an Academic Subject Certificate in Sustainability
(students graduate high school with a college certificate!)
